Work in Progress (WIP)

These three words can apply to so many things and even situation. Like my sewing room. Hahaha.

Hollow Nine as leader/ender. Red, blue, purple, aqua.

I started last year to (again) organize my sewing space. I talked about it with the girls at the Artisanat group and was relieve to hear that I am not alone with this "task". One even said that she sews at the kitchen table because there's no space in her sewing room. (So, she does have a room specifically for sewing but …) okay. In a weird way, it made me feel good because, at least, I still sew in my sewing room. 👌

Regardless, a reorganization was needed. (See this post for the beginning of the journey)

More milk crates added

Then, DH removed the legs on the ironing board which I always deemed a waste of space.

So much better now. I need more crates as the board is too low for me but it works for now.

BUT am I sewing?
Not much to show besides the Hollow Nines. I'm mostly sewing backings and bindings.

On Saturday, Jan 17th, we (five ladies and myself) gathered to cut the batting for 42 baby quilts. I should had taken pictures but forgot, sorry.
This is what I brought home.

Each bundle consist of a top, batting and backing (in one piece or in pieces). I have 34 quilts with me. Two of the ladies wanted to bring some home to finish right away.

One of the ladies had strips of flannelette that she generously gave for the cause. I'm sewing these strips together for the backing. She had some gorgeous prints.

I'm in love! 😍
Anywho! I'm cutting and sewing binding too but that makes boring photos.

While reading Sara's blog, I was reminded to check my fabric purchases for 2025. I keep everything on spreadsheets. (I love spreadsheets!) I was surprised to read a total of $185.33 was spend on fabric. It doesn't include the $25 spent on bonding interfacing (steam-a-seam) for the Table Scrap Challenge with Elvis. In 2024, I did real well spending only $56.39. I'll try to do better this year.

This big boy celebrated his fifth birthday. I was finally able to take a decent picture of him. Raven is usually camera shy but seems to be okay with a phone picture. 😊

We had snow, then snow, then snow, then a "heatwave" of +6 Celsius, then we had snow, and snow, and then . . . frigid cold at - 40 Celsius this morning. (There are no typos in the previous sentence.) This year promises some wacky surprises. Better buckle my seat belt! Lol.

Have a great week, everyone. ;^)

Good job on the organizing! I have many aspirations about being organized, but it is difficult for me. Maybe this year I will get there….

your weather sounds like our weather. Sunny today but bitterly cold. Nice hollow nine patches. I made those for my RSC project last year. Great way to use up those 2.5" squares. I'm using up more squares this year in two of my projects. They never really go away!

Ironing board on crates = brilliant! Here's what I have to say about WIP progress. We all want to get our projects done, but sometimes you just have to do all the "other" not-as-much-fun quilting stuff in order to get projects done. So pat yourself on the back for getting organizing, backings, bindings, & batting done & dusted. Ya can't finish a quilt without 'em!

The satisfaction of using up scraps is enhanced by buying a little fresh fabric now and then.

"Then, DH removed the legs on the ironing board which I always deemed a waste of space." Well, of course! Why didn't I think of that while frowning at my ironing board! Thanks for posting that simple change. You've opened up new possibilities for my space.

Oh my gosh, your weather - and of course we are sweltering! Well done with all those baby quilts, are you getting help with all the quilting and binding? I do love pieced backings though of course it is extra work.

I'm enjoying a chair that is empty. . .that took me months so I applaud the large amount of progress you made in your space! Happy Birthday Raven! Congratulations on making so many kits! I love the pieced backings you are creating!

Your ladies have done well with all those baby quilts, a great effort. What a good idea to remove the legs on your ironing board. Oh and Raven is looking gorgeous! xx

Those hollow nine patches are so sweet! What a great quilt they will make! I can hardly believe how much you have accomplished in your sewing room and with your group of ladies. Well done!

What a creative way to use the space below your ironing board. I trust you will be getting help with the 34 quilt bundles you took home. What a generous group you are.

Hi, Chantal! I hear you on sewing room organization! I keep trying. If only I could sew faster! Happy Birthday to Raven, he is so beautiful. Wow, 40 below? We had 16 below this week. I will officially stop whining about it. Good luck with all the baby quilts!

Spreadsheets remind me too much about the many years of work days, something I'm happy to be retired from. These days at most I try to put our tax info on a worksheet before preparing the official forms. Tried once to keep a spreadsheet for my quilt projects, hmm, wonder where that is ...

Glad to see the progress with your sewing room organization. I did the same thing with my ironing board. But, OH MY, where are you going to put all the bundles that you brought home!?!?!?!

I think keeping the fabric and tools under control is a universal problem! We all just keep trying. Sewing backings and bindings may not be the most exciting thing to share on the blog, but it's so impressive that you and your group are finishing so many comfort quilts! Stay warm and sew on, Chantal!

Ok, your -40 makes my 5º Fahrenheit seem like nothing! I hate the cold and it's going to stay really cold for us all week. You and your friends have been getting a lot done. And, yep, sew areas are forever in need of picking up, reorganizing and general upkeep. You've made tremendous progress on you room. Keep it up!

Lovely work on those Hollow Nines for the RSC, Chantal and happy birthday to Raven!

Under $200 on fabric for a whole year? You rock! I still use the ironing board I got in 1980 (harvest gold legs) though I have a Big Board that fits on top.
