Up To No Good ... Again

What have I done this week? 

I'm almost ashamed to say not much once again. I did play with fabric but it didn't amount to much. Let's see. 

I got more bags of scrap. 

I opened the box first and was having fun when I thought: "Oh! Photos!" so I just threw everything back into the box. 

Then I sorted the scraps by colour. 

This is my living room floor every single day this week, and I am still not done. That's a lot of scraps. 

On Wednesday, I went to see the girls quilting. I used to belong to this group but I was working and had to use a vacation day every time I participated. So I quit. Now that I am not working, I could join but I don't have money to pay for it. Vicious cycle! 

Would you like to see what the girls are working on? I didn't take a picture of everyone's work because some were still just blocks. 

This is Carole's top. She sewed the last seam while I was there. 

Anne-Marie did some koala bears in grey and brown. Aren't they cute? 

He's cuter in person. 

Back home, I got some of my smallest scraps out to make the last border on the Hole in the Barn Door quilt. 

I probably have enough for another Hole in the Barn Door quilt with two borders. (Thanks, Joy for your generous offer but I think I'm good for now, lol.) Yellow and black are underneath the bags. Green is still on my cutting table. Not done playing with green ... 

... but I did work with red ... a little bit. 

Yes, I started another block. 😔 Sigh! I am hopeless! 

I saw this on the Moda free pattern page and I just had to try it out. 

Don't worry about the points, it isn't sewn yet. I'm just having fun on the computer. 

And then, I added more, of course. 

Ugh! Nope! Sashing? 

I love this! In every colour! 

It's not exactly a good contender for RSC though. It demands some very big scrap pieces. I know I will run out of the white fabric before the block is done.

How about yellow? Pouf! Like magic, it is now yellow! 

Do not adjust your monitors. I used a different white for the yellow HSTs. 

Here's a "behind the scenes" photo.  This is how I can make a 12" block in 3 minutes. 

Not so magical, right? With pieces finishing at 1.5", the entire block will measure 12". I will tweak my way of cutting to shorten the cutting time. You might see this block (whatever its name is) again. 

I forgot to mention in my last post that my personal Rainbow-UFO Challenge is Shoreline. These blocks are made with really small pieces. Oh, the fun I will have!

My intention is not to finish this big quilt but to move it forward. I'll count how many blocks are made and I'll try to double it.

Last Sprint for Purple Sewing.

The time for sewing some purple fabric is running out fast. I still have to do some purple crumb blocks but I did succeed in doing some sewing this week. 

For the colour Purple, my Rainbow UFO Challenge is Framed 9-Patch and it is now a top. A small top. 

It measures 56 X 48 inches. I might add another row at the bottom. 

It won't reach twin bed size but at least it will be a better size throw. It is going back into the closet as the time to work on it is now over. Another month; another UFO Challenge. Wonder what Angela will call for August. 

I love this reversed one. 

Scrap Jar Star in purple and lots of 9-Patch blocks. 

For the solid coloured fabric, I was disappointed in the purple I had to play with. They look like funeral parlor purple. Yuck!

At the bottom of the pillowcase (yes, my solids live in a pillowcase, a huge one too), I found some more purple, but lovely ones this time. So I sew up more of this block. 

Pretty lilac and eggplant kind of purple make these blocks sing. The bottom left is more of a black cherry colour or deep red wine but since I didn't use it when we had the red month, I'm throwing it in this month. :^D 

And for la pièce de résistance, a purple placemat with lots of dots, circles and splashes! 

Even the background fabric has circles. And a cat for free! Haha. 

I finished the binding early this morning. The backing is something between dusty rose and color-me-purple on navy. It's an oldie but I am happy with the result. See Joyful Quilter's blog for more Table Scrap Challenge goodies. 

And here we are at the end. Phew! That was a lot of stuff this week. 

Things have returned to normal at work (whatever normal now means!) It was more fun getting up in the morning to go to work, you know I mean? anywho! It's a long weekend now and sewing is all I can think of.

Purple is Painful

Purple is a painful colour. Painful to describe, to photograph, to match; it has so many nuances and undertones that it must be the most colourful colour! There is something for everyone to like in this one.

And it's so much fun to work with! Let's see what happened in my sewing room. 

Three more Jericho Wall blocks were made. Can you believe it? I have 6 purple Jericho Wall blocks! Okay! Enough of this. Let's sew something else. 

How about 4 Star Bloom blocks? Love these together. 

I found a cat. I need it in my placemat. 

The little purple scrap had a curvy cut. It wasn't easy to fix it but the cat is on my mat! (Sounds like Dr. Seuss, right?) 

I also work on my Rainbow UFO Challenge. Purple is Framed 9-Patch quilt. These blocks need to be assembled. 

Three quadrants are done. One more to go and then, I will be three seams away from a top! 

It's smaller than what I had in mind. Should I make one more row? Add big borders? Some pondering to do here. 

Also, pondering about these cornerstones. Still. 

Very early this morning, I took it outside to take pictures as the weatherman promised a wet weekend. (It's almost noon now and it's bright and sunny!) Anywho! Black or red? Just one tiny difference and yet, it changes the entire quilt. I don't know which one I like best. 

I need to show you my purple flowers too.

I believe I am done doodling chickadees. It's time to turn to colours. (I don't know why the photo turned bluish. It's weird!) 

It was an awful week at the office.  We are 4 team assistants, but with 2 on vacation = a lot more work for me. Yet, I did a lot of sewing too just to erase the tension from work in the evening. One assistant is returning on Monday. Yay! I survived, haha!

And It's Only May!

I feel like everything is moving forward but me. 

I manage just a little bit of sewing last weekend. I can't seem to sit down at the sewing machine during the week evenings.

Jericho Wall "Olive Green" is the only block made so far, with a little 9-Patch as leader-ender. 

No progress on any of my personal Rainbow UFO Challenges. Sigh!

MIL Table Topper

My MIL decided to sell her camper and everything with it. She said she's having too much fun where she is now and the A/C is free, haha. We're stuck in a heatwave and it's only MAY! We aren't used to the heat yet and it got cranked up to the 33C. Even the nights aren't cool. Anywho! I'm happy for her but selling her camper means she has no use for the table topper I was working on. I know I should have given it to her a long, long time ago but ... Oh well. Now I don't feel like working on it anymore. Again!

All the tulips are quilted. I thought of doing ditch quilting in the log cabin blocks

Not the best quilting but it's quilted. Threads aren't borrowed either. 
Still lots to do.

My son is moving back home next weekend. I'll try to move Spinners closer to the finish line. 

It will be easier to put it away once the blocks are done.

Then, I noticed spots on some blocks.

It looks like Raven came into this room and shook his head when his abscess busted last month. Now I have to finish a quilt not knowing if it's stained forever or not. Sigh!

DH is mowing the lawn for the second week in a row ... and it's only MAY! It was due too. The grass is as tall as the mower's wheels. 

I finally got the email thanking me for applying for the job; it also said that I was a close second. What's the use of knowing that? Anywho! I do have a job so I've lost nothing. Except for the bigger paycheck, haha. Better luck next time, I guess.

Pink and Rainbow UFO Challenge Review

Well, for a girl who hasn't sewed once this week, I still have a little bit to show.

I tackled a mountain of neutral/white scraps and 

tamed it down to manageable sizes (1.5", 2", and 2.5") that I need for the different RSC2022 blocks I'm doing this year. I'm happy about that. The tub on the left is filled with pieces fit for crumb blocks. 

Oh yes, there's a WHOLE lot more to do but at least, there's one big Ziplock bag done! 

Last weekend, I managed to do the pink Scrap Jar Star.

The Rainbow UFO Challenge for March ended up with less quilting than I had anticipated. The challenge was to quilt Field of Poppies. I knew I wouldn't finish the entire quilt as it is quite big. 

The black portion is all done, though. Yay! 

You might be able to see the quilting better in the next picture. I did a black center with pistils and seeds. It's a little primitive looking and I love it. 

I thought I would have time to do some of the red too. 

As you can see in the picture, it didn't work so well. Free motion quilting has to be practiced more than what I do.  So, it was abandoned while I find the will to unpick all those stitches. Ugh! 

The UFO for April is Westering Women but I am switching it for the table runner I never finished for my MIL. Yikes! I thought it was finished and given too. I was shocked when I found it hidden under a pile of fabric. I need to finish it quickly as I would like to give it to her before she leaves for the camping in mid-May. 

It is ready to be pinned. Hopefully, the stitching on this one will be easier than on Field of Poppies.

March Rainbow UFO Challenge

On Tuesday, we woke up to a Winter Wonderland perfect landscape once again. We are to get some more this weekend. Hopefully, it's the last time I need to shovel. 

More Spinners' blocks were sewn during February. 

Did the two missing blocks. I found another solid blue that wasn't already in this quilt so I added it along with a soft purple. I'm happy with that. 

Did lots and lots of little HSTs and sewed them in the 4-Patch formation in order to finish a few more blocks.

 

So here's what was ...

... and what is now. 

Like a puzzle, lots of HSTs units are missing, leaving gaps in the big picture. I have to be careful how I build them now as the units have to "befriend" their neighbours. So I make 2 or 3 units at a time, take them to the design floor, and try to find them a place to live. It's a slow pace but I like it. I'm happy with the progress too. 

In my Rainbow UFO Challenge, the colour yellow is tagged to the Buttons and Spools project which needs to be quilted. Since Field of Poppies is pinned already, I will switch these two around. I will work on Buttons and Spools when the colour green is called. (Or whenever Field of Poppies is done.)
