Scrap Basket and Mending Quilts

It took a long time but I got the mending done! Whoop Whoop!

Some of you might remember my Kitchen Party quilt. My son (the third one of the name) had it on his bed. During a visit to his place, I noticed how used the quilt was. 

The yellow fabric must have been of poor quality because it is the only one that disintegrated. Sigh! Some emergency repairs were needed. 

I made a block using some lemon prints because the first block was obliviously made with a "lemon" fabric. It was hard to hand-stitch the block on top of the old one and sew through all those fabrics where all the triangle points meet. 

I have just noticed that the new broken dish block doesn't face the same way the others do. Oh well! All I need to do now is to quilt the repairs. DS will be happy to have his quilt back. 

On to the next quilt. 

This quilt is on my bed. DH's corner of the quilt has been abused by his beard. Time for repairs, I just can't procrastinate any longer. 

I was lucky that the fabric from the curtains was big enough to cover both sections. (Sometimes the quilt is placed upside down on the bed, so both ends need repairs.) The bonus about this: the quilt now matches the curtains. It is a quilt bought at Sears about 15 years ago. One day, I'll stop making quilts for others and have one of my own on my bed. Some day! 

I played with bits and bobs sewing them up to make yardages. 

Here's my finished brown scrap bag. 

Side A with cats and a lone wolf. 

Side B with deer by the stone wall. It is lined with a soft brown-lined ivory sparkled with pink roses. 

I had three ziplock bags of brown scraps so I made a big scrap basket, so much so that it isn't half full. On the left side, you can see the bottom. The tiny little bits are in a plastic bag. I like to keep them separate from the bigger pieces. It is easier to locate them when I make crumb blocks. 

I'll be joining Joy for her Table Scrap Challenge. Although I haven't used any letters (it's an option, right?) I did use lots of table scrap. Winner!

After all was said and done, I found these parts that equal almost half of a basket. No wonder it took me such a long time to sew this one. Ha! Oh, well, I now have parts for a brown crumb quilt. 

Bonnie K. Hunter started her annual Mystery Quilt this morning. In an attempt to resist starting something new, I occupied my mind with Lori's (humble Quilts)  QAL Parsonsfield. I know, I know, it is still starting something new but this one is small and it's so cute. It won't take long to do. I want to have a few finishes before embarking on a big project, you know what I mean. So here's where I'm at. 

The centre is made. 

I thought the red roses would look nice beside the centre's navy blue flowers but after seeing the photos, I'm not so sure anymore. Another "Oh well!" Too bad. 

My leader-ender is Paper Chain Block.

Where's my orange?

Heck! Where's me??!!

Where have I been all of September?  Well, first and foremost, I am still alive and kicking. That's always a good thing, right? :^D

Second, did a few things but not much in the sewing room.

Let's see what's story the pictures are telling.

Remember this poor old quilt?

 It is done and delivered.

 It even has its own label now with the name of the original quilter. No, I didn't add my name on there. I thought it wouldn't be appropriate.

It got a couple of good soaks and trips in the washing machine. I got it back to almost its original color. 

You can probably see the quilting of hearts forming a circle in this picture. Love it. 
He was very happy to have his quilt back. So much so that I almost got a hug!!  :^D


Back in July, we helped my friend Pink to move. Her very pregnant cat held it all in for that day. Six days later she had 5 adorable little kittens. Of course I had to go back (3 hours drive to and fro) just to see the little balls of fur. I was so not disappointed. Moving forward another 5 weeks and I was back down there to play with the bigger little balls of fur.

It was pure heaven ... for me anyway.

Most of the pictures are blurry because ... well they're very active kittens and Pink and I just kept laughing. (These pictures were also taken with a phone.)

There were two kittens missing as they had found a good home already. I had a lot of fun with the remaining three. 

 I have this face on a lot of the blurry pictures because ...

this little one kept biting my leg or foot. I came back home with lots of scratches on both arms and a very light heart. All was worth it.

I also had a dark episode but that's behind me now so let's leave it there. And I had fun with the loom again but that's for another post. So what's left? Quilting. Or at least some sewing. And it was the month of Orange for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Yay!

Then two of my colleagues at work asked for kittens. Drove back to Pink's place, picked up two gorgeous kittens, put them in a box and drove back home. Was too tired to take each one to their new home that night, so we had some cat food and a "homemade" litter box. Again, the fun I had with little balls of paper and kitties. 

By 11 p.m. they were almost ready to go to bed. I wasn't.

It's the last time these brothers slept together. Both are now happily living in their new homes ... and thriving. :^D  And I miss them so much.

So now can I sew? September has been beautiful weather-wise, so much so that it was hard to stay inside and sew. Now that the cooler weather is here I can finally sit and sew a bit. I am playing with orange because I missed the Orange Month. :^(

I am enjoying this ...  :^)

More to come. But for now, I am tired and will take a break. I have the week off  so more sewing tomorrow. (Can you Hashtag big grind here or what?)

Ready? Set. Quilt!

The new seat mats are taking shape.

It looks so good with its dark frame.

Then the basting started.

Not many pins left.


But today is too sunshiny nice of a day to be in the basement. So out the door I go. Of course, I'll bring something to do with me.

I tagged this project. One side is completely done (Yay!) and I am now closing the front to the back. I am trying to match her closing stitches.

Don't know if you can see her stitches here. It's very crude whip-stitches. The picture was taken with my phone as I still don't have my camera. Sigh! It is gone back to the factory to see the good Canon Doctor. I miss it.

Pin, pin, pin.

Today, I am working on the restoration of an older quilt which belongs to a co-worker.

Lots were done so far ...

some are pinned and ready to be stitched down.

An entire arch is waiting to be pinned next.

Then, when all this is done, I think I can move to the other end of the quilt ... and fix some more. :^D The thing is the more I look the more I find more pieces in need of some fixing and I never get to the other end of the quilt, lol.

Slow Progress

Since this is my first try at repairing an old quilt, progress is slow but it's progressing nevertheless.

I have figured out that if I sew all the components together before, it is easier to applique after. I am learning, I am learning ... slowly but surely.  :^D

The new and the old

I was asked if I would be interested in mending an old quilt.  (CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE)  How can I say no? Of course, I'm interested in this project.

A co-worker has loved his ex-mother-in-law's quilt to the bone. (Yes, he kept the quilt after the divorce. Nice, right?)

Oh yes, to the bone! 

This Wedding Ring quilt must be a summer quilt because the lightest batting I have seen so far was used.

Both ends are very yellowed. It will have a long hot bath with Dawn once I am done. Some fixing is needed at both ends.

It is machine pieced and hand quilted. Done some 30 years ago, in brown and salmon colored calico fabrics, it has faded somewhat. It makes it hard for me to find some matching fabrics. A muslin was used for the background and for the backing.  

The little bit on the bottom right is the one I sewn in. It looks so bright but that is the best I can do. After mending this one, I read on the web that it is better to leave the old fabric in and just applique the new one on top. Ahhhhh! I guess it will be easier and faster than removing the old torn fabric.  ':^[

So this will be my slow stitching project for today ... and the rest of the month! Hehehe! No, it shouldn't take that long, except that I only have one fabric in my stash that matches. Time for a shopping spree ....umm... I mean ... oh you know what I mean!
