It Just Occurred to Me

Do you know what I don't have? I don't have a pink scrap basket! I know, right? I never had enough pink scraps to make a basket. Well that has changed (drastically) in the past few weeks. I have MORE than enough pink scraps to make a basket. Let's sew this.  

Aren't those Lemurs fun? Yes, it came from the big bag. 

Because I wanted to keep the "Paris Flea Market" selvage of the roses print (on the right), I simply sew it on top of the light pink. Unfortunately, when one sews after a long day at work... 

blooper happens! I sewed the other edge to the roses print. 😒 Easy fix. 

So, this is what I have so far. Not much but it's a start. 

Another thing I started was the Table Scrap Challenge and that one is now finished. Yay! 

Table Scrap Challenge is hosted by The Joyful Quilter and the January theme was "hot beverage" or Pink. Well, a hot beverage, for a Canadian, is a Timmy's! 

I didn't know what I was doing so I just winged it. Sewn some reds together, trying to make it look like a cylinder with shades and highlights. The cup is sparsely "fused" to the background. Then I tried to zigzag the edges. I glued the lid on top and free-hand machine sewed the lines on the lid. Not perfect but so am I. 

Yes, I know, the lid has no hole because I didn't want to spill my coffee on my brand new mug rug. Lol. 

I just sewed the letters on. It will fray but that's fine by me. For a first try, I'm very happy with the result. 

I don't Double-Double which, I have recently learned, is a typical Canadian saying. It means 2 sugar, 2 cream coffee. No other country says "a double-double, please" when ordering coffee. It has also been accepted by the Webster Dictionary as a word. Wow! I didn't know that either. My favourite Tim coffee is a medium with 1 sugar and 2 milk or a half French (Vanilla) half coffee. Yummm! 

The back is full of cups (in case I feel like a Peppermint Tea, or a Sun Kissed Ginger Tea.) and bound with red scraps. Ta-dah!

RSC2025 Second Block

You might have seen this one before as it is all over the Internet where I first spot it. The Colorful Fabriholic did one in red. Oh! Wow! Jan saw the same picture I've seen and fell in love with. See here. 

I believe the notes are Jan's. Scrappy or not, this one looks great. But being me, I'm taking it one step further. Or maybe it's a step back, I don't know but anywho, my plan is to have fun with it. 

I did the Aqua in 2024 as a tester block. Then 3 pinks for January's colour. 

So many possibilities ...

So many reasons to make more ... 

Three more came to play. They are the reason I added fabric to the scraps. It's kind of contradictory to the plan to add to the scraps but ... that's what I needed ... until I found the other bags. I left the additional fabric in the scrap bag anyway. 

I seem to like this layout the best but I have the whole year to decide. I have a mind to make one scrappy as in the above picture for the Quilts for Survivors. Yes, I would love to send them more quilt tops. Not promising the tops will go this year but I'll work on a top for them during the year. Maybe the RSC one will be donated, who knows? 

I said I would sew on Tuesday night but I didn't this week. The first Tuesday of the month is the ARTisanat's meeting (where I brought more gifted scrap bags home). I brought the three baby quilts as donations to the Baby's Angel. Yes, I said three as I finished another one last weekend. WhooHoo!! 

Rainbow on the Sidewalk (aka HST Baby quilt) is done and gone. I love this one. It was a top in 2023. You can see the two other baby quilts here. Both were made with flannelette, and Rainbow is scrap cotton with a flannelette backing. No, it did not diminish any of the flannelette bins but the year is still young. 😁

I really, really love this one. And it received a lot of "Ah" and "Oh" during "show and tell" at the meeting. 

I played "thread chicken" and lost. An inch from the edge! Darn! 

Also did some little 9-Patch blocks ... 

... but that's for another post.

It's Glitter Season!

 

The office is all decorated for the Holidays. It is my first year with this company and I find it funny that their Christmas tree sports the logo's colours. White, black and lime green. 

This one stands in the lunchroom and 

this one is in the employees space. I forgot to take a picture of the one at the front desk where I work. Next time. 

My backyard was also in glitter this morning but it doesn't show well in the photo. 

In the sewing room ... no glitters but some finishes. Yay! 

Back in October, during a quilting retreat, I assembled two little baby quilts from flannelette scraps. 

The first one is sunny, happy and Spring calling... and done! 

Stitch in the ditch in both direction. The backing is another piece of flannelette that has the same print as one of the patch on the front. I found this cute orange floral on yellow for the binding. Just what this quilt needed; more flowers. Finish at 28 X 34

The second one was quite small and needed a larger border. 

This one is 5" wide. I decided to use up all of the red fabric. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough to make 4 9-patch blocks so I did this. It stayed on the design wall for a few evenings before I was convinced that, yep, I hate it. So I changed it. 

Much happier with this. It's not because you have little bits left, it means you have to find a place for them in this quilt. They can got in the next one. So, now, it is quilted. I don't have any red flannelette that looked good with the snowflake one. Dark blue would have been nice but not one of those on hands played well with this quilt. I have two huge bins (and then some) of flannelette and I can't find a suitable binding for this quilt. Really? Hmm. Go look again. 

What I found is not exactly flannelette. It's more of a brush cotton but not the bottom weight kind. 

Hey, it works so go for it. I like stripes for bindings. It measures 28.5" square. 

In this picture, you can see the soft blue print on the large border. The backing is an old flannelette piece left over from a pajamas I did when DS1 was 2yo. When I finished sewing the binding, I noticed that my machine had a heartburn and just spit all over the corner. Argh!! 

It just came back from a spa day! What else does it want? A Christmas present? Sheesh!! Sigh! 

I have one more little flannel quilt to finish. Last week, I received a large bag of scraps .. and some more flannel. There might be another baby quilt in there. These are fun to do and fast too. Eventually, this blog will be back to its regular programming.

It's a Flimsy!

Double Halo is finally a flimsy and I couldn't wait to share it with you. 

I rush to sew the skinny sashing and haste makes waste. The sashing did not align properly. 

And not just once but all of them. Argh! 

An emergency call was sent to the Super Seam Ripper and eventually, it got done properly before the long weekend was over.

Oh, My! The aqua block and the blue block are basically all the same colour. And the purple one is nothing but purple. Let's try in a sunny spot. 

Yes, that's better. I love it so much. (The quilt is bumpy because the grass is long ... and wet.) 

The centre star doesn't have the same fabric as the stars, only the same colour. (The square in a square uses a piece of the M&M millennium print, yes. Haha.) Click on the picture to zoom in. 

The first block I did was the red star and I didn't calculate how big a scrap I needed to make this block. I just wing it as I usually do. Well, yes, I ran out of red. Most of the readers said they couldn't see the difference so, here it is. 

That prompted me to use other fabrics to make the middle star. 

I'll have to check the orange bottom corner. It looks funny in all the pictures. Oh! but I love this quilt.

Spinning My Wheels

I am still pondering about my RSC2022 options. The list is way too long and I find it hard to remove some contenders. Anyone else with this kind of problem? 

The 9-Patch and HSTs are still on ... like forever! Haha.

The crumb bricks too as I don't have enough to do anything with these.

What if I make a mask every month? It looks like we will be needing these for some time still. One thing I forgot to say in my previous post is that we are working from home again. I go to the office two mornings a week to distribute incoming mail and to mail out what was printed by the caseworkers. I like this routine as it gets me out of the house without meeting anyone. Win-win.

but not the liner so I have to redo this one.
The yellow one is not finished. 

I would love to do a Scrap Jar Star quilt. So I will start sewing 4-Patch blocks (or 16 Patch blocks) (same thing). Do I sew the block in rainbow colours or one colour? 

Both are pleasing to me. Sigh! 

Then the strings are demanding some attention. I have an idea that would be an opportunity for some of them to shine. Still on the drawing board but here's what I have so far. 

The solid coloured fabric from my mother's stash is also something I would like to use up and I love this quilt.

Hmm! It could be interesting. No, I don't know the name. Yes, I know where I'm going with this. 

I would also love to make another Hidden Gems quilt

or a Burgoyne Surrounded but for a big quilt this time. 

How many hours of sewing do I have in a month? Darn!  That really cramp my style. 

There's also my Personal Rainbow UFO Challenge. The colour red calls for a new project but that's for another post. Stay tuned. 

Oh! Almost forgot. I have two finishes to show you. YES! 

First, it's Stars in Blue, labeled and all. My first finish of the year! Yay! 

Remember this panel I salvaged from a year ago? It was quilted with only batting. No backing. See this post for the story behind it. It was the perfect size for Stars in Blue. Win/win! (I know it's not straight but it'll do.)

The binding is built with dark blue scraps.

I think it was the only solution to my dilemma since nothing looked good from the front and the back. 

Then, there's this finish. 

Phew! Made it. Looking at the fabric for clues of who goes with who was impossible in the Spider Web quilt. Once I organized the yellow pieces together, pointing in the same direction, it went so much faster. 

All I had to do was to turn the pieces in my hand and search for the yellow piece going to the right. 

The rest of the pieces were picked as per their unique shape. 

Now, I'll take it apart and put it away so my son can work on the puzzle he received on New Year's Eve. 

It's nothing interesting so I won't keep you posted on this one.

I am sorry to announce that the year didn't start on the right foot for us. Raven disappeared on January 3. I've been very down and still am. I'm pushing myself to sew as I know it will help me (and you will too with the comments and your posts about wonderful stuff). Thank you for being there. 

BUT 

After 10 days away, he came back home. I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him on the deck. He lost a lot of weight but is otherwise okay as you can tell from this picture. 

He's still sassy! Haha. I'm so happy.
