Finally! A Friday Finish

It's been such a long, long time since I've finished something quilty, 

and then, 

POW! 

I got three!

I finished my little SuperNova. Super proud of that one! But it's really not big. 13 inches square. 

I finished the Curve Challenge hosted by Cécile and Corinne. Thank you, ladies, for this fun challenge. 

Overjoy with this one. 

AAAnnnnndd, I finished ...

Ecstatic over this one. 

It wasn't easy. I found the fabric for the binding and I barely had enough. Phew! But I couldn't sew it on because my quilting on the last border was horrible! 

This fold was pretty deep, enough that I didn't even come close to the backing fabric when cutting the edges off. It involved removing the quilting in the center of the quilt, not just the last border. 

Atrocious! 

This ridge is like Mount Everest compared to the other bumps. Again, missing backing fabric after cutting the edges. Sigh! 

Unpicking for a few evenings and re-quilting for a few more evenings got the job done nicely this time. 

I had run out of pink thread when I did the pink block. So I finished that too ... only to have it unpicked too. Bigger sigh! 

Everything that could go wrong with a quilt happened with this one. In the end, I still get to have a wonderful quilt. 

Smile has the seal of approval from our black monster. 

One more just for the heck of it. 

I still have many threads ends to burrow.

The Curve Challenge - Done

On May 30th, Sunday night, bedtime, and it dawns on me that I have to finish the Curve Challenge hosted by Cécile and Corinne. It is due on May 31st! 

I decided to applique leaves for the Curves Challenge as I am not that great at sewing curves. My wallhanging hasn't moved one inch since ... I finished applique all the leaves. 

Monday morning, I measured the quilt, found batting and a piece of old yellowing muslin. Good enough for a wall hanging. Since I'm working from home, I had enough time to baste it too. 

During lunchtime, I started quilting. The wind first ... 

... and then the leaves. At break time, I cut the binding. I picked a white binding at first but I didn't like it. I turned to my favorite binding fabric, a nice brown that makes everything looks framed. I like that.  As soon as the clock hit 4, I shut down the computer and sewed the binding pieces together and onto the quilt. I unstitched a leaf to restitch it over the binding.   

Sorry, no pictures, as I was racing against the clock by this time. 

Ta-daaaaahhhh!! It is done and, here, in Canada, it is still May 31st.  Took pictures in the last sun rays but most pictures were not that good. You can really see the quilting of the "wind" in this one.

It's the first time I do this. A little bit tricky but fun.

Catching My Breath

It was a crazy week but I survived and today, I plan to sew.

I took Tuesday afternoon off from work to go help a vaccine site (30 minutes drive one way) because there was no one available to go. The vaccine bottles got to the site frozen! (Which is normal, as they are always frozen but someone forgot to get them out early.) It took 45 minutes to thaw, so we were backlogged all day. I got back home at 9 pm. Exhausted but happy. That was followed by three days of zoom meetings and formation on the new platform we will be using at the office next month. Since I am in the "Super Users" group, I had to be present. We need to know the back doors of this program so we can answer all questions. 

Now, on to quilty things, please. I need a "fix" of fabric and coffee, haha. 

Last weekend, I continued the quilting on Smile and 

Ta-Dah! 

The pinwheels and the black and white sections are all quilted. The borders and the strip with the M&M gang are next. I'll do those with a black thread. 

I used plain white thread to the B/W sections. You can see here that the dark green block (which was MIA in the last post) looks much better than its pattern does with the dark green thread.  

You can see that the border is very wavy and Kathy talked about that just last week. My top was not taut enough when I pinned it. That's what happens when you rush into things like I do. Haha! 

I said I would show you the blue HSTs for my second HST quilt. 

Here they are with my little rascal, Raven. 

Raven: "Mama, you should have stacked the piles straighter for the picture."

Me: "May I remind you that they were all pretty BEFORE you decided to run into them."

Raven: "I would never do such a thing, Mama!" (staying put just long enough for a photo before darting off again.)

For the second HST quilt, I need a gazillion of 4-Patches made with 2" HSTs. And that it. Easy peasy, right? I'll have two wonderful HST quilts in no time. Bwahahahaha! 

The good thing about Zoom meetings and formation is that no one knows what your hands are doing. 

So, I did this. 

  

I finished sewing all the leaves for Cecile & Corinne's Challenge "Curves".  It has to be finished (completely finished) for next month. I really need to work on this one. (The background still looks blue but it is white.)

Hello Yellow

February is the Yellow Month. My personal Yellow challenge is the Buttons and Spools quilt, made in 2020. It needs a back, pinning, and quilting just like the Smile quilt did in January. So, instead of having two quilts half quilted at the end of February, I will just continue to work on Smile. :^)

(Yes, I know, it's only the second month of the year and I'm already breaking the rules. That's the prerogative of being the maker of the rules. Hehehe.)

BUT, I will be working with yellow to do things like this.

Before all this, I had to finish a few things with the pink fabric, like these two crumb blocks I had started. 

Then I saw the little pieces leftover from the pink tulip. Well, I'm not one to throw away some good fabrics, so ... 

... tiny little Shoo Fly blocks were made. They measure 3.5 inches. Then I had to hunt down the other tulips' corners. 

I did find the yellow ones,  

but can't locate the red ones. I'm sure they'll show up eventually. My sewing room needs a good tidy-up session. 

Anywho! I'm hook on tiny little blocks again. They are so cute! 

Now that I have another tulip block finished, I can sew two more Shoo Fly blocks. Yay! 

My hand sewing project is coming along too. 

All the yellow leaves are done. I am working on the green one on top. Twelve leaves are done, eight to go. I know the background looks blue but, believe me, it is actually white. 

One final picture to remind me that I am only as good as my coffee is. 

Bloopers are part of my daily routine. 😋

Slow Me Down Sunday

What a week that was! Glad it's over. I didn't have time to do the laundry, groceries, cooking, I am so grateful for my husband. (Well, I still have to do laundry today but I won't complain.) He worked for his keep this week, haha. Anywho! Not much sewing got done of course, but I did play with fabric this morning. 

We finally have our Winter Wonderland picture-perfect landscape Saturday! 

It snowed and snowed, up to 10" (25cm) of the white stuff. 

It came down fast and furious.

Everything is so beautiful this morning.

Goodbye brown landscape! I don't recall a winter so snowless. 

Pictured two weeks ago. 

But all is right in my world now. (Except for Covid! 😑)

About two weeks ago, I started thinking "what should I do for Cécile & Corinne's Challenge: Curves? They intimidate me." So, I decided on Orange Peel and applique. Yes, that would be good. I got the die cutter out and some solid coloured fabrics. 

Last week, some cutting happened.  

Way too much cutting happened. 

So today, I will slow down and stitch and pray for a dear, dear friend of mine. I forgot to take pictures of all the "options" I tried but here is what I think my layout will be. Still pondering. But this one looks good. ... Maybe. 

Do I like that dark leaf?
