Whatever Wednesday: October's Colours

Really? October?
I was driving around today and I was astonished by the lack of colours. Someone should tell Mother Nature which month it is because it sure doesn't look like October.

Around here, trees are starting to change early September. I got married at the end of September, when the trees had completely hauled their Fall coats on. It was so beautiful. This year, most trees are still green.

 Like those on the right side of this picture. What's with that? Let's zoom in on this picture for a moment.

The Ottawa River (la rivière des Outaouais) is running through this picture and beyond is Quebec. Some trees are red but many are still green.  Most amazing of all is that ALL the trees have leaves. Strange.

This is a WIP tree, lol! It is working very slowly on progressing towards Fall but it's shy about changing in front of everyone, lol.

Some have never recovered from the Ice Storm of 1998. (eighteen years ago.) The branches of this tree are growing on top of the trunk as it is forever bent.

This is a typical end-of-September-early-October picture in my region. I think it is so beautiful.

My favourite dirt road. Someone ran out of orange and red ink.

Okay so this is where I live. What? What do you mean you can't see the village? Come closer.

I apologise to the people who live in the south and don't have winters as I wanted to show pictures of Fall, but it looks like it hasn't reached my town yet, lol. 

Main drag, somewhere, Canada. (again green trees. I did took these pictures this afternoon. Honest!) What a beautiful day this is.

Love the paint job on this tree. Like raspberry and lime swirls. Hmmm.... great colours for a quilt. Hehehe!

Here we are; home! My own backyard isn't as orange as it should be. The rudbeckia flowers around the clothesline post are all gone because they know September has passed. The forest is still undecided. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind that it still look like Summer. I only hope that Fall won't embellished the landscape and be all gone within 48 hours, you know I mean. I would like to enjoy Fall as much as I have enjoyed Summer. I am sad when people say they don't believe in global warming; I see its fingerprints. (O_O)

Tuesday Archives

Sharon, from Vroomans Quilts, participate in the Tuesday Archives, organised by Val from Val's Quilting Studio.  It sounds like fun so I decided to participate. Since the link is open for three days, I am not too late for this week linky party.

Since Angela chose Orange and Yellow for the month of October, I want to present to you L'Orange Noir. (the Black Orange) This quilt was done in 2007. It is pre-blogging history.

Pictured in a magazine, a very old make-do quilt with lots of pink and everything else under the sun. It had a stripy design with HSTs on both sides. I loved to hate it because the pink was all wrong. Most of the time the pink HSTs were on the right side (with the pink strips) and sometimes they were facing the other fabric and it was annoying this OCD little girl to no end.

I decided to make myself one ... with the HSTs facing the right side.  As you can see with the wiggly rainbow waves, I didn't do much better. Didn't even bother to turn the fabric so ALL the lines were horizontal lol.

Hey look! It's the M&M gang with their cars! 

The black fabrics were hand quilted on diagonal towards the right with the M&M to the left.

The Orange section have big circles. Hope you can see them.

Compared to the new basket I have made with the same fabric, you can see the quilt has faded a little bit but it is holding pretty good. It is not big (44 X 33 ") so it was easy for the boys to carry it around. One would sit on it and the other one would pull. All was fun until the water work started because "the wall hit my head" kind of accident. 

The back is another oldie in flannel. We used to call them Smiley Face babies; now they are called the Emoji babies.

Sunrise October

Ironically, this morning it is overcast with chances of rain, but at Soscrappy, it is Sunrise October and I'll got with that! :^D

I did some sewing last night and moved a thing or two along. 

Since Orange is part of the monthly colour, let me start by showing you my baby quilt. From this ... 

To this morning. 

I only have a meter of the grey so I have to be careful and plan it well. Maybe some yellow under the orange? Or lime? I'll play with these ideas as I do the laundry today. 

As most of you know, my RSC2016 Peace and Plenty is assembled and waiting for a border or two. So, what's a girl to do during the last three months of the year? Start another one, of course! 

There's so many blocks I want to do ... this one was made as a leader / ender.

Look, it has red and gold, as last month colour. But that is soooo passé, right? lol.

Oh look. I think it wants to help me with the laundry. I am sooooo keeping this one. 
(Seriously now. Gayle from Mangofeet has these cute Monkey blocks and I really like them and ... well, you can see by yourself right here. )
Can't remember how big hers are, but mine stands at 10.5 inches unfinished. 

Okay back to the picture.

Block # 2. 

Hopefully some orange ones will join these two blocks at some point during today. I still have many things to do for the Craft Sale. 

I also played a little bit with a cute messenger bag I got from Suebee's World. 

Before I start cutting this one, I took the measurements of all the pieces, so I can make more. :^D 

And then, there is this book which is, somehow, always under hand. It is a Judy Martin book!

Angie from A Quilting Reader's Garden made me an offer I just couldn't resist and this lovely book now resides with me. I want to make all the fantastic quilts from this book. Oh My!!!  Thank you, Angie!

Last day of September

Little bits of sewing were made during September, most of which were for the Craft Sale, therefore not exactly quilt related. 

My OMG (One Monthly Goal) for September was to make a baby quilt using a meter of dove grey fabric I had in my stash for a long time. Some of you might remember this photo. 

I was first inspired by the quilt in this picture. (sorry it is somewhat small) Should I make it grey and lime or grey and yellow? I spent many days trying out different fabrics and then, my plan changed. Ever happened to you? 



On this last day of September, I am sorry to say that my progress looks like this; 

Not much, but it is a beginning. The blocks are 5.5 inches unfinished. Now that I look at the picture, I don't like the first orange square on the left. It is showing more white than I expected. 

I will join Heidi at Red Letter Quilts when the October goal setting link party opens as this project will become my focus point for the next month. 

With my first cup of coffee in hand, I like to read blogs. This morning was no exception. LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color posted an interesting subject and lots of quilters answered her. I am adding the link here, so you can go and check it out. She is cleaning up her sewing room and came across some orphan blocks. She asks if we lose track of our UFOs, if we make blocks as a try-out and if so what do we do with them after, and things like that. In the comments, I found a few things I will start to do. Maybe you'll find some good suggestions too or you have one or two to offer her. Anywho, I have enjoyed reading that one.
