Yay! Friday Finish

It's always fun to finish a quilt, right?

Like I promise on Monday, here is my finished Hidden Gems aka RSC2015.

In order to take some pictures outside before it got too dark, I pulled it out of the dryer when it was half dried, so not quite all crinkled up yet.

The other reason why I pulled it out of the dryer is this nasty surprise.

What can I do now? Please help!!

I used one sheet of colour catcher in the wash. Obviously one was not enough. If I wash it again with more sheets, will it help? or am I wasting my time, colour sheets and water? It was a donation quilt but now, I just can't give a quilt like that.  To me, this is a very sad ending. All the while I was working on this, I kept thinking about a little girl, or boy enjoying this colourful little gem and now ... bummer!!

It looks real good ... from far.  (Photographed through the screened porch on second floor.)

Until next time ... I'll keep watch for the running red.

your quilt is just sensational.... oh my gosh that colour run. how devastating. I haven't had that myself but I have heard more colour washers could work - it's so much in one place. perhaps even having the colour wash on it wet?
Hopefully someone has some better ideas...

Keep washing it until most of the bleed is gone and use more color sheets. It's beautiful and btw a young child will NOT mind the bleed if any is left.

This is a spectacular quilt -- I can imagine your dismay on seeing the colour run. But after a few minutes reflection, I agree with Frog Quilter -- if you can't get the colour out, you may be able to keep it in the quilt and still pass it on.

Have you access to a colour dye remover that you apply directly? We have something called "dylon Runaway" which you could use in the affected area, perhaps. Maybe try pinning one of your colour run sheets (or a few) to the area and wash again. But the dryer may have fixed the run in place.

Failing removal, you might try fading it with some bright sunshine in that spot (if that is something you get at this time of year). Or disguising with some hand stitching to make it a feature?

Good luck!

I would try washing again with Synthrapol, adding a lot of color catchers, and then only putting in the dryer if the bleeding is reversed or gone. If not, try repeat rinses before trying to dry it. Don't try to dry it flat though or the prolonged time being wet may make the bleed continue.

It's a beautiful quilt. It's so sad that the colours ran. I hope you find a solution to fix it.

Oh, I gasped when I saw that! I have no advice, but what everyone's telling you sounds like a good idea - more washing with more color catchers certainly can't hurt...
Good luck!

Oh, that color run! The quilt is beautiful. How exciting to have it all done. (I hope that color comes out - it's amazing regardless.)

So very sorry for the bleeding of the color red in your quilt. So much of your time and love went into this and you were going to donate it. Hope you can fix the problem. It will make a wonderful child's quilt.

Oh worst nightmare..... I would be resealing with more colour things to...

Oh dear, what a shame! And such a beautiful quilt. I have had success with using Metapex which I think is the same thing as Synthrapol as recommended by Quilting Babica. xx

A good reminder to check fabrics - especially older ones - for colour fastness! I am just off to do that myself. xx

Oh bong sang !
Bon courage mon amie !
Oups ! J'allais oublier : ton quilt est supeeeeeeerbe!

You have gotten plenty of good advice by now - I bet it will come out with more washing. The quilt is gorgeous!! It will make a wonderful gift.

What a beautiful quilt. So sad to see that red run. Let us know if some of the suggestions worked.

We have a product called RUNAWAY. It does work well. I'm not sure how anything will work now you have heat set it in the dryer. I always wash my quilts on a very windy day. Hang them out and they dry nice and fluffy in no time. GOOD LUCK. I really love your quilt...

Definitely go to the link Swooze cited. It is a very detailed description of how to remove bleeding. Hope you have some success because this is such a delightful quilt and you worked so hard on it.

I had some horrible bleeding with a blue fabric and great success with Synthropol. I had even completely dried the quilt before I noticed. Good luck!

It's gorgeous! I would pin a colour catcher sheet to the front and back where the colour run area is and rewash in cold water. And repeat if necessary. Each wash will take out more of the dye.

Aaaawww nooooo! I'm so sorry you had a bleeding problem on your gorgeous quilt. I hope with all the helpful hints above that you get it taken care of. It is such a pretty quilt.

What a beautiful quilt. I have heard of people pinning color catchers directly to the quilt on top of a problem area. Hopefully another wash or two will help to get rid of the red.

I love this quilt and am so sorry it bled. I saw another post today about a quilt with bleeding and she linked to this blog. The author tells about ways to prevent bleeding and then explains what she did to rescue her quilt. I hope it helps.

I've had this pattern and some fabric set aside for a while, and this inspires me to get started.

The quilt is beautiful and I agree that I don't think a child will even notice the bleeding. However, it'd bother me, as I see that it is bothering you. I have had that happen to me and I kept washing it with multiple color catchers (without drying it) that eventually got all the bleeding out. Good luck!

The quilt is fantastic! I, also, agree that a child will never notice the bleeding. Good luck!

How DARE that color run on such a beautiful quilt! Like the others have said, I’ve heard that several color catchers and repeated washings will help. Best of luck. Let us know next week how it did, OK?

If all else fails, you could reproduce it and appliqué the new one on top, with some added quilting. I did that to a precious old quilt, thus keeping the original in place, for historical reasons. Good luck!

Pin a (or more) Shout dye catcher right where the problem is and wash again.
Spectacular quilt.

Sally Trude said...

Definitely go to Vicki Welsh's website (see Alycia's comment). You want to get the dye in water and suspended. If you have a front loader washer there probably isn't enough water so I would use a tub instead. The color catchers don't really pull out the dye, the soap and water does that. Luckily, it doesn't look like you have a fabric that is attracting the dye so it isn't getting all over the quilt. Let us know how it turns out! It's still an awesome quilt.

It turned out SEW beautifully... if you discount that unfortunate bleeding!! Here's hoping that you can fix the damage.

That is such a beautiful quilt, Chantal! There was definitely an audible "Oh no!" From me when I saw the bleeding color. I think you got lots of good advice from other quilters here, and I hope you find the perfect solution to the problem!

I see others have recommended colorways by vicki welsh. I had to follow her process for a pink that was bleeding. I went through 3 washes with color catchers and still had bleeding. I then used vickis method. It is not quick. Once i completed her method I washed it once again with color catcher to test. After using her method the color catcher came out with no color at all. Truly will save this quilt. You will be able to donate it still. You won't even know where the bleeding was.

I love this design and want to make one too. As to the bleed... did you prewash your fabrics? ALWAYS pre wash. I was shocked once to see a yellow batik that would not stop running! Never used it because of that. Red is unstable anyway, I love and use it but...
As to what to do now... it's hard to bleach out the white without bleaching out the colors around it. And you don't know if the red is truly stabalized. If I were going to exhibit it I'd go in and replace the white. If it was for cuddling, I might try a bleach pen but that's risky too. This is a live and learn sorry to say. I have had this happen even after I prewashed fabrics too.

Oh no! I have no solutions for you bit it is a beautiful quilt. Hope you are able to get the bleeding out.... otherwise you'll just have to call that one a shadow block =)
